January HulaCross Results - Congrats to Mike Ward!

Hello Hulagans,

It was another fantastic day of racing at Kalaeloa Raceway Park with January's first HulaCross of 2011!  The stage has been set for what is expected to be an exciting season of Hula-X action, with some serious potential for fun and excitement.

The day started off with two hours of practice consisting of open lapping where our line-up of drivers learned the extremely technical course.  The front half of the course, consisting of the run down from the HulaCross jump and mudpit towards Bunker 3, is always different at each event.  This event's course was slow and required serious concentration in order to maneuver through without getting stuck.  It did provide for even more time in front of the main section of spectators, which was very pleasing as a result.

The action then kicked into high gear when our drivers went for the time attack in their chosen mounts.  The timing system is proving to be a reliable workhorse when configured properly, and our driver's seemed happy with the very accurate systems.  These times were then used to determine the initial heats for our foray into Hulagan Racing.  Mike Ward, once again, proved that he's got the chops and the vehicle to get it done by taking the Fastest Lap of the day by an impressive three seconds! The battle for second and third was closely contested with Davin Kubo and Steve Oliberos separated by only a margin .83 seconds followed by newcomer Thomas Carter in his white Subaru Impreza.

There were lots of new faces at this event, and even some old hands like Graham Henderson who was a frequent Drift Session participant.  Peter Crouch was a great example of someone doing very well against the heavy hitters with his Suzuki Samurai, knocking out a 1:15.9 for seventh place. We think he's great proof that it's all about the driver when it comes to events like this. Steven Chong led an impressive charge in his bright red Suzuki Amigo and determined the middle of the pack which ran all the way up into the 1:29 second range.  This event just keeps getting better and better, and the participants are becoming faster and faster.

Special mention is Cliff Wicklund and his friend Cavan Medeiros with their awesome dune buggies.  These guys were amazing to watch thanks to their quick spins around super-tight corners thanks to their turning brakes.  We'd like to see more dune buggies attend the events...with enough, we'd like to open up their own buggy class, so if you've got a buggy, come join us!

Hulagan Racing is all about flag to flag, wheel 2 wheel action...and this is definetly the highlight of the event.  We had two fast and furious heats of vehicles all pressing for the lead.  Mike Ward was incredibly fast, claiming the lead immediately, and holding it against Steve Oliberos in a spectacular battle to the finish for the first heat.  Graham did a great job holding his own in his first foray into the event.  It's too bad he lives on the mainland, because we'd certainly like to see him again. The second heat was lead by Landon Paras in his dark green Saturn, beeping his horn constantly in either what was a sign of happiness or the fact his hands were all over the wheel!  It was also great to see one of our HulaBeater Rentals make it into the final heat with Gilbert Valdez doing well in the Nissan Maxima he chose to run.  These HulaBeaters are simply awesome in the fact that you can rent one, and then run it all day with little worry about fixing it later.

The final battle was an intense contest between the top three heavy hitters, David Rodgrigues, Mike Ward, and Steve Oliberos.  From the beginning, David Rodrigues commanded a heavy lead over Mike Ward who started way back in the pack.  Mike fought his way up, and thanks to a red flag, was able to close the gap and eventually pass David on the main straight leading up to the tabletop jump.  For a moment, David's V8 Cherokee was able to contest the pass on the entrance to the following turn, but Mike's 4-cyl turbo Subaru had the better speed and power-to-weight ration, and rocketed away.  It was a battle of atrrition for the remaining vehicles as one-by one they fell victim to the rapidly detoriating road surfaces.  Poor Steve became embroiled in traffic jam and dropped back to fifth place.  Landon Paris was fortunate to walk away with a very successful third place followed by Cy Thomas in fourth.  All in all, it was a fantastic event that really showed off the crowd-pleasing excitement that HulaCross can generate.

In addition to the main events, we also had a short 5-lap RallyRig Battle!  Two semi-rigs went toe-to-toe in the dirt and resulted in some spectacular crashing and bashing as well as some incredible 6-wheel drifts through the mud!  It was a great end cap to the event!

We hope to see all of you at future HulaCross events...if you haven't been to one of our events, then you don't know what you're missing!  Come on out and check us out!  Click the link to view the results or follow the navigation by going to Motorsports - Hula-X - Results - 2011!

Insane!

If you think it takes alot to get into HulaCross, you're in for a real surprise.  You don't need a purpose-built racecar...you just need four wheels and at least two doors!  We've got vehicles racing out there that run the gauntlet from Honda Accords, Chevy Blazers, Ford Rangers to even Lincoln Towncars and Oldsmobiles!  It's cheap, and it's good fun...just go to your local junkyard, buy a cheap beater, paint some numbers on it and bring it out!  Of course, we've got guys out there that are starting to build awesome vehicles for the event, like Steve Oliberos and his rally-prepped S13, or Davin Kubo with his Subaru WRX...things are starting to heat up between the serious competitors, and we can't wait to see what happens next year!

Wow!

For this event, we introduced what many of our stock car racers have been screaming for:  True Wheel 2 Wheel Racing!  We had FIVE fantastic heats of Hulagan Racing...which is our new flag to flag racing series.  The top two winners of each Heat advanced to the final Main event.  This was a trial event that resulted in some of the best racing we've had thus far at KRP and was an extreme crowd-pleaser.  We're very happy with the Hulagan Racing format and are now set for the January Season where we'll introduce a Championship series for the both the HulaCross and Hulagan Racing!  The winner of this informal main was Shane Moniz with his Jeep Cherokee, 2nd place was Chad Moniz in his Ford Explorer, and third went to Ryan Evans in his Honda Odyssey Go-Kart!!!! (Ryan has some huge...lug nuts!)

Hulagan Racing

We're still working out the kinks on our HulaCross timing systems, but we'll be doing some serious testing before the next event to make sure we've got the system timers working properly.  We want to put as many cars on the track as we can to keep things exciting, so be watching for changes to the format, HulaCross time attackers!

In addition, we held our first ever All Wahine Challenge with a combined purse value of $435 dollars!  These girls went out and raced on a whim, with some great crowd support.  The racing was pretty awesome, and there was tons of cheering as they pulled out the guts to do some pretty daring bumping and grinding!  We'd like to thank the sponsors that put the purse up for grabs:

Finally, we'd like to congratulate our winners in the following photos...awarded by Co-Developer & Park Owner Jeanette Grace:

HulaCross Wheel2Wheel Racing on Sunday, December 12th!

Hello Hulagans!

We'd like to thank you for your past participation and invite you to the next HulaCross event to be held on Sunday, December 12th, 2010 at Kalaeloa Raceway Park!  SCCA Folks, we're sorry but we're unable to hold it on our normal day because we'll be participating in the Kapolei Light Parade.  FYI, All future events should fall on the second Saturday of every month.

With the holiday season upon us, we know that your time is valuable, but we appreciate your support in developing HulaCross over the past few months.  We would like to present our preliminary rules for the upcoming 2011 HulaCross Season.  Please take the time to read through the new changes we'll be making as well as noting the new safety requirements.   The morning practice will be exactly the same as the last event, with open lapping.  The afternoon, however, will introduce two new divisions:  Hulagan Racing & HulaCross.

Click this link for the official Hula-X Rules

You can also find the rules on the navigation bar above under Motorsports > Hula-X > Rules

PLEASE NOTE:  The Official HulaCross rules are not FINAL.  They will be discussed at the Dec 12th with our participants.  That is why we're not requiring anything to be done for this event.  We want to make sure everyone is comfortable and understands the safety requirements for the vehicles.

Hulagan Racing = Wheel 2 Wheel Racing

The 12th will be a landmark event for us as we will be introducing for the first time ever, a flag-to-flag wheel-2-wheel racing component.  Willing participants will compete in a lapped race with the first person across the finish line as the winner!  This upcoming event will be considered as a trial basis.  Due to the short notice, we will not require you to have all of the safety equipment for the December 12th event, but it is highly recommended.  To participate in the 2011 Hulagan Racing series you WILL BE REQUIRED to have all of the safety equipment indicated as necessary within the attached rules.  Safety equipment noted as recommended are not mandatory but are EXTREMELY encouraged.

HulaCross Timers

We will be re-introducing the use of timers at this next event.  For all former Super Lap Series competitors, you may remember the small Hot Lap Timers purchased from www.pegasusautoracing.com.  We will be using these once again, so if you still have your old timers, then please make sure to bring them out to the events.  For those of you that do not have the Hot Lap Timers, we have 8 of them for rent ($10) which will most likely allow us to run the entire field if we swap them out between runs.

FYI, the old timer design has been discontinued.  The new version is called the Hot Lap LTI In-Car Timing System, and retails for about $249 for the entire system.  It's very high-tech and works with our current transmitter.   We have a great contact with Coyer Enterprises which will allows to do a group buy for the 2011 Season for a much reduced price.  Interested parties, please let me know. If you don't rent or have your own timer, you won't be able to get a time for the events.  We'll have the group-buy information available soon.

In addition, we request that for this event, you ensure that your assigned vehicle number is in a highly visible location, and that for each run you ensure that it is clean and legible.  We intend to use the same numbers as the last event to make sign-up as easy as possible.

That's it for now. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.  We hope to see all of you on Sunday, December 12th, 2010 at Hula-X!

Congratulations to our Hula-X Winners!

Our second HulaCross was seriously awesome full of extreme off-road action as well as some of the most amazing jumps and fender-bender carnage Oahu has ever seen!  Thanks to the great participation, we were able to give an $800 combined purse for our second event.  You can find some fantastic photos at our official Facebook page - Kalaeloa Raceway Park!

We'd like to thank everyone that came out to participate at Hula-X...the drivers put on an incredible show that wowed the crowd, and left most people giggling in excitement, including the drivers themselves!  Throughout the day, the crowds ooh'ed and ahh'ed at tons of insane tabletop jumps, thrilled at the mudpit splashes, and screamed at the off-the-wall crashes that resulted in some seriously raw footage that we simply can't wait to put together in our next video. We'd also like to thank our volunteers, including our course workers, timing officials, and our photo/videographers for making the event happen.

Thanks to DH Built for coming out and crushing some cars with his monster rig...it was good fun and a perfect complement to the Hula-X action!

We welcome you to check out our next HulaCross coming in December and join the rest of us as we enjoy what has simply become one of the most phenomenal motorsports events on Oahu.

Heads up to all of our drivers...we would like to put on a flag-to-flag, wheel-2-wheel race, but we simply must require that you have a firesuit, 4,5, or 6 point harness, secure yet removable window nets and/or arm restraints (Need nets on both sides if you have passengers).  We are looking at a minimum 4 vehicles for the race.  Purses will depend on driver participation.

In addition, we'd like to congratulate our winners in the following photos...awarded by Co-Developer & Park Owner Jeanette Grace.
