July's Weekend of Racing RallyCross - 7-16-11

Hawaii Region Event Announcement

July's Weekend of Racing RallyCross! – Saturday, July 16, 2011

The Hawaii Region of the Sports Car Club of America will be sanctioning their ninth RallyCross of the 2010-2011 Season on Saturday, July 16, 2011.  The RallyCross will be held at the Kalaeloa Raceway Park in Honolulu, Hawaii.

What is RallyCross?  Imagine a scaled down version of a rally stage laid out on a non-paved plot of land where the course is delineated by traffic cones instead of rocks or trees.  The entry fees and equipment requirements are considerably less than those necessary to enter any other forms of performance rally, so in most locations one need only arrive at an event in a sound, hardtop vehicle, suitable helmet, closed toe shoes and the entry fee.   Hawaii SCCA will assist first time competitors with entering the appropriate class, making their way through technical inspection and finding their way around the course.  Participating in SCCA RallyCross helps drivers gain car control skills on low traction surfaces.  Best of all, it’s great fun.

RallyCross classes are tailored for local entrants but usually categorize cars according to the number of driven wheels, engine capability and the style of tires mounted.  Unlike SOLO, a similar competition staged on paved surfaces, where an entrant’s ranking is based on the single fastest run, RallyCross competitions are usually judged on the total of multiple runs.

Competitors will be given eight runs on the course, with the best five runs of the eight runs counting for their event “time” to be used for scoring purposes.  If time allows more runs or fun runs for all competitors may be allowed.  When not competing on course, all competitors will have assigned work positions, so plan to bring shoes for walking/running on dirt, sun screen and suitable protection from the elements.

Classes for the 2010-2011 Season shall be: Stock, Prepared, and Modified.  Within each of these classes there are further breakdowns by all-wheel, front-wheel, and rear-wheel drive vehicles.  You may download the 2010 RallyCross Rulebook from the www.scca.com website.

Each competitor will be required to present their vehicle-fully muffled, seat belts in working order-to the Tech Inspection Team at 8AM.  Vehicles shall not have leaking fluids or “enhanced” tires (no home-made studded tires).  As well, vehicles with a high center of gravity or excessive noise may not be allowed to participate; this is at the discretion of the Event Chairman and Tech Inspector.  A Snell SA-2000, M-2000 or newer helmet is required for all drivers and passengers.

Entry Fees will be $60 for current SCCA Members and $75 for all others the day of the event.  Please note that the non-member fee includes an SCCA Weekend membership and will give you a $15-discount towards full SCCA membership, which includes a subscription to SportsCar (our national magazine).  Only checks or money orders payable to SCCA Hawaii-Rally will be accepted at the event.

Now for those that want to save some monies, we do have an early, on-line registration program.  The RallyCross program offers a 10-day/$10-plan, which requires you to register on-line at motorsportreg.com not later than ten days prior to the event.  So for the July 16, 2011 event, the deadline is midnight July 7, 2011.  Costs for early on-line registration are $50 for current SCCA members and $65 for all others.   There is a minimum 20 pre-registered participant requirement in order to hold the RallyCross.

T-Shirts with SCCA RallyCross logo and Kalaeloa Raceway Park logo will also be available for purchase on-
line and delivered at the event.  T-shirt costs are $15.  Go to www.motorsportreg.com for early registration using a credit card or Paypal.

Competitors must present a valid driver’s license, and if under 18-years of age, they must contact the Region for a waiver form.   This form will need to be signed by the participant’s parents prior to competition.

Registration and Tech Inspection starts at 8AM, Drivers meeting at 9AM and Car’s on course begins around 9:30AM.  Course will be available for walking between 8:30 and 9AM.  We will have a half hour lunch break after everyone has had four runs on course.  After lunch we will finish the additional four runs.  The course maybe altered for safety reasons during the lunch break.  It may also be altered at any time should the event safety steward deem necessary.  The RallyCross will end at 5PM.  All participants must remove their own rubbish and make arrangements to tow any non-running, un-safe or un-drivable vehicles from the event site.

While the event is not a spectator event (i.e. we don’t charge for viewing), we know that you may want to bring your family and friends to watch you.  Kalaeloa Raceway Park will be charging Park Visitors for parking.  Viewing areas are “outside” the barriered areas.  Each participant will be allowed one “pit crew” and one “pit vehicle” in the paddock area.  Pets are not allowed at SCCA events, RallyCross included.

Directions to Event: From H1 West Bound, take the Kapolei Exit onto Fort Barrette Road to Roosevelt Avenue. Take a right onto Coral Sea ending at Kalaeloa Raceway Park just before the intersection of Tripoli Road.
