Running a Mazda5 at KRP Sand Drags. Just to prove a point...here's your friendly, neighborhood Media guy running his daily driven 2008 Mazda5 at the KRP Sand Drag track.
For the record, these runs were made on an unprepped, ungraded, unwatered track. On event days, the track is heavily watered to eliminate any dust. It is graded to provide a smooth, flat, tractable surface, and the start line is prepped after each run by event staff.
The Mazda5 was, admittedly, rather dirty after a weekend driving around on the windward side playing tour guide. I made sure to take some close shots of the wheel wells so you can see the amount of dust generated. Remember that this is a FWD vehicle, so the power is all coming from the front wheels. The car was driven in manual mode on all but the interior shot.
Even with the amount of dust generated, I had no problems braking and I was able to simply wash off the dust. The paint on the front and rear wells is fine and I drove home with no ill effects other than the possibility that my wife may scold me for bouncing off the rev limiter a few times. Of course, that's only if she watches this video. Fingers crossed.
This video is meant to disprove the theory that Sand Drags is any tougher on a vehicle than other motorsports. With proper care, maintenance, and some soap and bubblies, your car will be just fine.

Sand Dragster Rollover! During an initial testing run, Tom B.'s Sand Dragster crashed.
Tom and his crew were able to repair the damaged dragster, and was able to participate in the remainder of the day's racing activities thanks to the many safety features within the vehicle as well as his safety equipment.
Known as one of the fastest dragsters at KRP, Tom was able to achieve a second place finish in which his last run against the Matco Tools dragster resulted in a broken throttle cable mid-way through the race. We wish Tom all the best as he repairs his vehicle, and are very happy that he escaped injury. What an amazing performance!
