Help Us Make History Rallycross

SCCA RallyCross

Hawaii Region Event Announcement

Help Us Make History Rallycross – Saturday, September 25, 2010

The Hawaii Region of the Sports Car Club of America will be sanctioning their first RallyCross of the 2010-2011 Season on Saturday, September 25th, 2010.  The RallyCross will be held at the Kalaeloa Raceway Park in Honolulu, Hawaii.

What is RallyCross?  Imagine a scaled down version of a rally stage laid out on a non-paved plot of land where the course is delineated by traffic cones instead of rocks or trees.  The entry fees and equipment requirements are considerably less than those necessary to enter any other forms of performance rally, so in most locations one need only arrive at an event in a sound, hardtop vehicle, suitable helmet, closed toe shoes and the entry fee.   Hawaii SCCA will assist first time competitors with entering the appropriate class, making their way through technical inspection and finding their way around the course.  Participating in SCCA RallyCross helps drivers gain car control skills on low traction surfaces.  Best of all, it’s great fun.

RallyCross classes are tailored for local entrants but usually categorize cars according to the number of driven wheels, engine capability and the style of tires mounted.  Unlike SOLO, a similar competition staged on paved surfaces, where an entrant’s ranking is based on the single fastest run, RallyCross competitions are usually judged on the total of multiple runs.

Competitors will be given four runs on the course, with the best three runs of the four runs counting for their event “time” to be used for scoring purposes.  If time allows more runs or fun runs for all competitors may be allowed.  When not competing on course, all competitors will have assigned work positions, so plan to bring shoes for walking/running on dirt, sun screen and suitable protection from the elements.

Classes for the 2010-2011 Season shall be: Stock, Prepared, and Modified.  Within each of these classes there are further breakdowns by all-wheel, front-wheel, and rear-wheel drive vehicles.  You may download the 2010 RallyCross Rulebook from the www.scca.com website.

Each competitor will be required to present their vehicle-fully muffled, seat belts in working order-to the Tech Inspection Team at 8AM.  Vehicles shall not have leaking fluids or “enhanced” tires (no studded tires).  As well, vehicles with a high center of gravity or excessive noise may not be allowed to participate; this is at the discretion of the Event Chairman and Tech Inspector.  A Snell SA-2000, M-2000 or newer helmet is required for all drivers and passengers.

Entry Fees will be $40 for current SCCA Members and $55 for all others the day of the event.  Please note that the non-member fee includes an SCCA Weekend membership and will give you a $15-discount towards full SCCA membership, which includes a subscription to SportsCar (our national magazine).  Only checks or money orders payable to SCCA Hawaii-Rally will be accepted at the event.

Now for those that want to save some monies, we do have an early, on-line registration program.  The RallyCross program offers a 10-day/$10-plan, which requires you to register on-line at motorsportreg.com not later than ten days prior to the event.  So for the September 25, 2010 event, the deadline is midnight September 15, 2010.  Costs for early on-line registration are $30 for current SCCA members and $45 for all others.  T-Shirts with SCCA RallyCross and Kalaeloa Raceway Park will also be available for purchase on-line and delivered at the event.  T-shirt costs are $15.  Go to www.motorsportreg.com for early registration using a credit card or Paypal.

Competitors must present a valid driver’s license, and if under 18-years of age, they must contact the Region for a waiver form.   This form will need to be signed by the participant’s parents prior to competition.

Registration and Tech Inspection starts at 8AM, Drivers meeting at 9AM and Car’s on course begins around 9:30AM.  Course will be available for walking between 8:30 and 9AM.  We will have a half hour lunch break after everyone has had two runs on course.  After lunch we will finish the additional two runs.  The course maybe altered for safety reasons during the lunch break.  It may also be altered at any time should the event safety steward deem necessary.  The RallyCross will end at 5PM.  All participants must remove their own rubbish and make arrangements to tow any non-running, un-safe or un-drivable vehicles from the event site.

While the event is not a spectator event (i.e. we would charge for viewing), we know that you may want to bring your family and friends to watch you.  Viewing areas are “outside” the barriered areas.  Each participant will be allowed one “pit crew” and one “pit vehicle” in the paddock area.  Pets are not allowed at SCCA events, RallyCross included.

Directions to Event: From H1 West Bound, take the Kapolei Exit onto Fort Barrette Road to Roosevelt Avenue. Take a right onto Coral Sea ending at Kalaeloa Raceway Park just before the intersection of Tripoli Road.

KRP! Open for business!

Kalaeloa Raceway Park is now open!

It's a fantastic day for Oahu motorsports enthusiasts!  KRP is now officially authorized to begin running events!  To set the record straight, we are a grassroots effort that will be running what we can on what we have available.  Nothing is fully constructed yet, but we are well on our way.  The facility will be constructed in phases with the first events consisting primarily dirt and mixed-terrain motorsports such as Sand/Mud Drags, Rally Cross, etc.

Our first Rallycross event will be held on Saturday, Sept 25th, with the first Sand Drag event the following day on Sunday, Sept 26th.  Early in the month of October, there will be an official groundbreaking ceremony for the new 1/4th mile Dirt Oval.  This is the first phase of the project.

The next phase will be the construction of the asphalt racing surfaces necessary to do drifting, autocross, go-karting, etc.  For drag racers, we are working through the process in order to facilitate the construction of a drag strip...the best we can do at the moment will be a 60-footer test N' tune launch pad/burnout box, possibly more.

Drag racers, please be patient with us as we are doing our best to provide for you and we are working on some big plans for you. There will be much more to come...this is a very long term project, and although we cannot provide for everyone immediately, our eventual goal is to do just that.  It will just take time, money, and most importantly, your support.

We would like to thank Leolani Kini, our rep for DHHL, whose support has been sorely appreciated.  Thanks to the Department of Hawaiian Homelands for making this project a reality as well as our contacts at the City and State as well as the community organizations that have walked this journey with us.

It is with great pride and appreciation that I would like to thank my fellow KRP Project Members...George & Jeanette Grace Jr., Chris Messer, Tom Bryant, Koa, Keoki, Hungry (there's so many!)...basically ALL of the hard working Paradise Lua crew that are out there actually BUILDING the track, and every single person that has put forth the effort and support to making this day and this dream happen.

We would like to give special thanks and love to our wives for standing by us for the past three and a half years as we put our hearts and souls into this project.  This is an unbelievable blessing...and something long overdue for our community of dedicated motorsports enthusiasts.

And finally, again, special thanks to George & Jeanette Grace Jr.  Without their love, their dedication, and their "putting their money where their mouth is"...this simply wouldn't have become a reality.

If you are interested in how you can help, how you can support, or have any questions or comments, please send your email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Mahalo to all of you, thank you for your support, and see you at the races at KRP!
